Enrolled ABE learners can add to their employment portfolio by achieving a short-term credential in the food service industry!
Any institution in Minnesota that serves food to the public is required to have someone on staff that holds a Minnesota Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate. This certifies that the holder has the knowledge, skills and abilities to:

  •  Identify hazards in the daily operation of the food establishment.

  • Develop or implement policies, procedures or standards to prevent food-borne illness.

  • Coordinate employee food safety training, direct food preparation activities and take corrective action as needed, to protect the health of the consumer.

  •  Complete in-house self-inspections of daily operations to ensure that food safety policies and procedures are followed.

ServSafe® is a curriculum and exam developed by the National Restaurant Association that is accepted as evidence for the CFPM credential in Minnesota.

The ServSafe® program helps prepare you for the ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification exam. Training covers these concepts:

  • The Importance of Food Safety

  • Good Personal Hygiene

  • Time and Temperature Control

  • Preventing Cross-Contamination

  • Cleaning & Sanitizating

  • Safe Food Preparation

  • Recieving & Storing Food

  • Methods of Thawing, Cooking, Cooling & Reheating Food

  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points)

  • Food Safety Regulations

  • and more!

ABE students can study and prepare for their ServSafe® Food Manager exam while enrolled in ABE. Instructors will access online Instructor Tools to enhance instruction. Students can study at their own pace under the guidance of a ServSafe® certified instructor. Instruction focuses on basic literacy and soft skills components (including vocabulary instruction, encoding and decoding of new words, developing strong study habits, etc...) in a contextualized manner. Students can choose to use the classroom materials while in class, or they may choose to purchase their own textbook at a cost of $75. At a time determined by the instructor and student, the instructor (or another certified proctor) will administer the ServSafe® exam to the student at a cost of $38 and upon passing (with a score of 76% or higher) the instructor will print and present the ServSafe® Food
Manager certificate to the student. Once the student has received their credential, the ABE instructor will assist them in the final step - completing the application for the Minnesota Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certificate.
